The doors to a new era in retail opened on October 7, 1956, when Southdale Center became the nation's first fully enclosed, climate-controlled regional shopping center.
Southdale was conceived by the Dayton Company in 1950, to meet the growing number of businesses moving to the suburbs. But the Dayton's held that they weren't moving just to follow a trend, they were creating a new benchmark in shopping, retail and community development. Southdale shopping center would be only part of a comprehensive community development that would encompass 500 acres located at 66th and France Avenue in the village of Edina, Minnesota.
